The U.S when first came to Vietnam did not understand our Customs n tradition of fighting invaders for over thousand years. Diem was a smart man, he understands this and strongly opposes the idea of having foreign troops in Vietnam. Too bad he was killed and history has proved that Diem was right.

Under Communism, everyone has to be a party member and have the same belief to hold position in the all society. Any different views consider "counter-revolutionary" and would not allow to exist. With the subsidized economy, everything is ration. Not only you will go hungry, but your family will go hungry also.

That is the drawback of a free society. You don't have to have same view or ideal with the leader to have high position in military. Some military officers with military power think they can do better, like Thailand, Pakistan, Philippine, etc.

I think South Vietnam at the time needed a strict leader and a strict system to stand against the communists, not a free one that the communists could take advantage of to spread propaganda.

It grew really big after months until he was killed by his generals (the U.S sent a O.K signal to the generals when they proposed to kill him. They thought Diem was sort of a dictator and was very strict). They thought killing him would solve all problems and South Vietnam could be free; people would be happy and SV would be able to stand against communists. It's sad that no later leaders were as good as he was.

Things started like this: Some buddhist temples provided the communists shelter and foods. Diem knew that and ordered his men to search the temples for the communists and some people were killed, then the communist who disguised as buddhlist monks started whining that Diem discrimated against them and that he was a dictator, and then thousands of buddhists went out to the streets to protest against him and grew big day by day.

Look, I know you are not going to post my comments because the truth hurts. But I'm going to ask anyway. As a Vietnamese growing up in America, I want to know why the South Vietnamese regime assassinated their own leader, Ngo Dinh Diem, and his brother?
