I just cried. So much soul and emotion behind that amazing tenor sound.

Ben's personal tune is his great contribution to jazz, and of being present, body and soul, note by note...like e.g Louis Armstrong's trumpet so easy to recognize among colleagues...

this was in response to relientkurt's question about the turn played by Ben at :40.

It is technically called a mordent. (google mordent). All he is doing is a one note up, back, one note under and back. Sometimes this is just called a turn. Why complicate and over analyze something so simply, intuitive and beautiful??? Ben isn't thinking about embellishing the vi chord or outlining the key - why should you?Transcribe it if you like, otherwise who gives a crap about putting a title on it...

The voice says (in spanish) that he knew the death of his friend Johnny Hodges just before the concert. That´s why he cried

Webster is the best.Sad and lovely.Easy play with hard emotion.

How strange that THE MOST LYRICAL tenor man in the history of jazz was incredibly volatile and occasionally violent. But I guess, a short fuse could coehist with a warm heart. I tip my hat to Ben and Teddy. Man, it's sublime beyond imagination.

It's a chromatic quick-lick which is based off of a target note you want to go play.Random example: Say you play a line that leads to a D, you would swiftly play D Eb D Db D. If you play that quickly (like Ben does at 38-42) you should get that sound. So essentially you're outlining your target note, or the last note of a line. Very common, handy tool. =)
