"Straight tone" singing can be out of tune and unpleasant. Vibrato in and of itself is not a bad thing-- this music was written at a time when a rather prominent vibrato, along with a good deal of portamento, was expected. Excessively wide vibrato is not a good thing and can indeed affect tuning, but eliminating vibrato is a rather simplistic approach to a more complex problem
