but rugby players are protected by rules, football players are protected by pads...in football you can hit anyone (blindside them or dead on- with or without the ball)..rugby you only allowed to hit the player with the ball

Football did not have pads in the beggining. It was added in recent times...Go watch games in the 1930-40's and even fifties..Football revolves around tackling, while tackling is not stressed in Rugby, therefore there needs to be protection...
