I quite agree. She quickly developed a style all her own, which, in my opinion, is much more versatile than Piaf's; I think that her versatility is part of the reason for her longevity. In any case, I doubt if she could have maintained her standing as a great popular entertainer had she adhered to the stiff style of her earliest performances.

A very young Mireille. You can see why she was called the new Piaf, which unfortunately haunted her the rest of her career. She nevered liked the comparison even as she admitted that Piaf was her idol. But what a grand lady she became. Are there any singers that can match her longevity as a performer? 1958 (I think) and still going strong. Amazing.

I agree this video has a certain minimalist charm, I prefer the more emotive style she evolved as her career matured. Chalk this preference up to all the time I spent watching singers on the Ed Sullivan Show during my (paleolithic) childhood and adolescence. As mlle Mathieu might say, *chacun à son goût*. In any case, we can concur that she is an outstanding singer and artist.Greetings from a fellow American.Harry

Miss Mathieu had the voice from the beginning of her career, but she certainly evolved as an entertainer over the years!
