No buddy, C is ionian, D is dorian, A7 is aeolian but you can substitute and get that if you would like it, instead of Aminor7. In the progression he replaced the ionian degree for the phrygian degree so he could play Eminor9, since he said that you can add a 9 to the progression, and now you have Eminor7 there (Eminor7 is your new Cmajor7) you're now allowed the 9. I think he said you can substitue Eminor for the Cmajor7, but also you can substitute the 6th chord which is usually minor, you can make that a dominant chord with a sharp 5 in it thus the A7#5

I see why you are confused. The first time he plays Em7/A7/Dm7/G7, he should play CM7/A7/Dm7/G7, because that far (0min54) he has not explain anything about it.hope it helps you |
