i have read hundreds (possibly thousands) of books over the yrs. from romance novels, to children's fic., to youth fic., westerns, adult fic., sci fi, fantasy, and to series things like nonfiction, textbooks, milton, chaucer, shakespeare, sarte, spenser, coetzee, faulkner, etc. Twilight belongs in the teen fiction genre- the plot is mediocre, predictable, and overall two dimensional. It's a work of pure entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm 21 btw, so the age card doesn't work with me.

I wouldn't compare Shakespeare's works to the work of any mere peon. His play MNS may be magical based (MANY of Shakespeares play have elements of 'magic' in it, especially spirits), but his lines hold so many meanings beyond the text/words that he brings his works to another level entirely. This is a level that authors like Meyer could never dream of reaching. Meyer's series is fiction for fun, basically: like any other romance novel or vampire novel out there.

there ARE better writers out there than Meyer/Rowling. let me name a few: Jane Austen, Virginial Woolf, Jean Paul Sarte, William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Chaucer, Roy Ahrundhi, Zadie Smith, A. Huxley, Herman Hesse, Oscar Wilde, Gustave Flaubert, Theodore Dreiser, Walt Whitman (even though I hate his work)...damn even Fyodor Dostoevsky!! Meyer/Rowling's works are pieces of popular literature, but by no means "literature" literature. Rowling maybe someday in a 100 yrs, but not meyer.

this is so beautiful. yes, i first read about it in twilight, but i'm glad i did because i really like claude debussy now. this song makes me wanna cry and theres parts of it where he doesn't do what you expect him to. you think a certain pattern is coming and it throws you off when its not but there's just something about it...it touches my soul. i know i sound totally sappy but yeah. there it is.

I would never dismiss those writers, I would just say they are no better than writers like Stephenie Meyer or JK Rowling, and it is quite possible to love and see the merits of both. Remember, it wasn't so long ago when books written by women were not taught in schools or universities... it's a sad assumption to make that just because someone likes a book like Twilight that they know nothing about literature. x

I have read those things, actually I won a royal scholarship of english literature this year. And as for Shakespeare, his works are full of the magical and the surreal. have you read Midsummer Nights Dream?

You think Twilight will become a great classic?Christ.Pick up some Chaucer, or Shakespeare, or even Kant or Descartes, damn, these are philosophers and they're better. Dante or Nietszche (Dantes Inferno) or Thus Spake Zarathustra are pretty slick too.And you learn real life in them too.

Can I just say, that Charles Dickens is now considered to be one of the greatest writers in the history of the English language, and his works began as soap opera style stories in magazines and were very popular amongst almost everyone who could read. So I wouldn't go judging what you think will make great literature when we look back at this time in years to come, x
