Jaco used to go around saying he invented the fretless bass, but it's not actually true nor meant to be taken literally. What he meant is that he defined the instrument, took it to a new level and that he showed everyone what could be done with it.

james jamerson got the first fender jazz fretless ralph armstong had #2 jaco say ralph with it when ralph was playing it with mahavinsnu but it was a custom order back in the 60s thats why jaco had to make his

Rick Danko was playing a fretless way before Jaco. No discredit to Jaco, he's more proficient on the instrument.

Yes. You have them when you take a fretted bass and you remove the frets, which is what many bassist used to do at that time. Fretless bass where not so common. Especially not Fender ones.

Well I don't know what Jaco normally plays (I've never heard of him till just now actually) but that's 100% the sound of a fretless bass, so I'd say they're just fret lines. |
