Yes ellwyn..true that even though the Soviets as the Superpower of the allies with a bigger military than all others combined killed over 75% of the axis..Stalin was a control freakSo yes i agree more than Stalin i give the Russian people most credit for without them we wouldn't be speaking English todayLegendary Sir Winston Churchill is the Icon of the War, great speeches and his troops held out Germans on their own.. but over 80% of Germans based on Soviet lines.. gratitude to Russians

Winston Churchill is lauded as the Icon of WWII, won Battle of Britain single-handedly..BUT..Superpower of the allies Soviets having killed over 7.7 million Germans (75% +)..at the 1945 summit one of the smaller allies america requested that (allied Italian's Fermi A bomb) Soviets help defeat the much lesser axis Japan.....which a key victory was Soviet invasion of Manchuria characterized by gigantic scale use of large formations and extensive employment of amphibious and airborne troops

i prefer to give the most credit to the Russian people (not stalin), for paying the biggest price and inflicting the most hurt on hitler's army. but at the time of this speech, the situation had to seem bleak to the UK, and the american attitude must have seemed selfish and short-sighted, to say the least.while we should be cautious about using force, turning back to such pacifism would be just as selfish and short-sighted today.

It embarrasses me when my fellow Americans come on with the uneducated "We saved your ass in WW2" every country was looking out for it's own future. Roosevelt knew well that if we stayed out of the war that by the late 40s there was a big chance America would be surrounded by hostile fascist empires. We didn't join to save anybody but ourselves, and all other countries would behave in the same way. |
