It's hard to find a piece of flint in the wilds. Easy to find a piece of quartz. Use a carbon steel knife blade, not stainless it won't work, and scrap the quartz. You got sparks. Find a pine tree, easy they are everywhere in the wilds, and collect some pine resin. Resin is full of terpines, flamable stuff. Resin, dried pine needles, scrap some sparks on it, and you got fire. Not just fire, but really hot fire from the terpines. Be careful as the terpines drip hot flames.

I think I read somewhere that Pyrite makes sparks like that too hence the name Pyrite: pyro is latin for fire
