also some planes touch down sideways, which seriously damaged the under carriages. Why couldn't they just have demolished the hill with the checkerboard? It is a huge graveyard...

Well, it was a smart decision to move the airport to a more remote location. I just have one lingering question, which was there first, the neighborhood, or the airport?

Part of the reason it was shut down was because even though no aircraft had ever crashed on approach, it was only a matter of time before it happened. And the neighborhood on the approach vector is densely populated. There was an estimate that a 747 could have killed between 1000-3000 people if one had ever crashed there.The result was enormous insurance premiums.And we all know money talks.

well...i guess thats the reason y they shut the old airport down. The landing is too hard and extremely dangerous. there are just 2 many Go-Arounds and missed approach. Plus those harsh landings damage the plane as well
