There's a reason that the great improvisers rely on the pentatonic. It has to do with harmony, something Malmsteen understands better than Metheny or any shredder.

I agree. There are plenty of guitar players who can play just as fast, but sounding like shit while doing it means nothing. John can play just as fast if not faster, but sounds excellent. Yngwie is one of my least favorite players because he is nothing but speed and crappy tone. |
