I wonder how the Golden Age of Ovett and Coe may have been changed if Van Damme had survived? Personally I think they would still have dominated but he was a terrible loss.

Its alledged that Ron Pickering was the one who said it but I have heard a few times about this infamous line as well.

I remember him saying it so it isn't a myth. It may have been in heats or semis or something but he definitely did say it

For decades the story has gone that the BBC commentator said during one of these finals:"And Juantorena opens his legs and shows his class". It's gone down in history as one of THE classic commentary bloopers.Sadly, this video proves it's a myth that he ever said it.

Juantorena has a great stride that made him great. You dont not see many track athletes that do 800/400m double. Most sprinters now do 100/200m or 200/400m double.

By the way, the announcer wouldn't be able to pronounce "Juantorena" correctly even if his life was at stake. |
