This is one of those numbers I almost burst into tears after watching, it is so beautiful. Dolores del Rio is beyond exquisite, her beauty legendary. This is up there with Berkeley's Lullaby of Broadway, Shanghai Lil, and Remember My Forgotten Man. And yes, its the final scene with the masquerade masks and the line "Why can't this go on-forever" that makes you wish it could.

Funny, I always would bust out into a musical number when feeling stress. I did Lullaby on Broadway once as a way to break the tension and stop a couple of guys from fighting. Another time in the middle of a stuffy job interview I sang Old Man River while looking out the window at the river. My mom was great, a very good dancer from the Bronx she once had a try out with the Rockettes of Radio City Music Hall. To bad they aren't making these great musicals anymore. Miss NY. Love the video!

Hello,I think that in the time we now live in all things from the past could be considered offensive. One thing I think about is this...what would the people of yesterday think of us if they could know the here and now, then?I make zero judgments on a time I did not live in but only of my time as it is all that matters anyway. The past is just that and we have many problems now that need to be solved, somehow.I liked this little video by the way and thanks for sharing. Bob.

Great number, really great. That's funny how they seem to "pretend" the whole act as a live performance, while there's no possibility of such thing. Great music and what excellent musicians they had at that time! The arrangements are very well done! Thanks for posting this.

barbara jean, the people that want to see the other parts of this movie won't be offended by" blackface" or 2 men dancing! the people that want to see this movie are looking for entertainment, others want to see the mores of the time! let the people see what was popular 74 years ago, don't censor, that's not your job, unless your a republican!

Warner Home Video needs to get their head out of their ass and release "Wonder Bar" on DVD. MGM/UA released it uncut on VHS and laserdisc (in "the Al Jolson Collection") and there were no riots in the streets over the blackface "Mule" number. I looked for this movie for 20 years before finally getting to see it. It was worth the wait...one of the best of all the 1930s musicals. |
