Yeah, I can sorta see that. Their forms would be a constant reminder of their mistake. I can see some not wanting to face the judgement of their parents or friends that avoided the island. Having people think they're natural donkeys might be easier then facing the questions and judgement they'd no doubt face.I wonder how many would try to find a way to tell the truth vs ones that preferred to accept a new life as what others think is a natural donkey.Would make an interesting tale.

Freaky...

Pinocchio could speak as a donkey, in the asinine dialect, which a few humans understood - but he kept his transformation a secret, out of shame. Most likely, even if the talking donkeys slipped through the Coachman's security precautions, they'd be too ashamed to tell anyone that they had once been boys, tricked into being changed.

Yeah that would be scary too. If you could still speak it might not be so bad. Though to be treated like a donkey with no way of telling them that even if you're a donkey, you still have a human mind. Yeah, that would suck. I think either way would suck to be honest. If you're mind alters, at least you don't know any better. But, then you're not really you anymore. And that's terrifying to me.

In the original book, Pinocchio kept his mind as a donkey, even though he was one for many months, working in a circus. And apparently, Lampwick, aka, Candlewick did as well, up until he died. Being trapped inside an altered body that you can't escape, I find scary.

One thing that would be terrifying for poor Alexander. Eventually, he's going to realize that no one is coming to his rescue. He's going to then realize that he is more or less doomed by the form the island has changed his body into. Sooner or later, he's going to start thinking like a donkey. Imaging knowing that it's only a matter of time before you lost everything that made you, you. Basically, that even if they found you, there'd be nothing left to save. That's terror.
