Hey man , I do the cup with my left hand to tighten up the head to make it much higher. You can also do it with just the tips of either hand on the edge.

This is great because this is the style I love to play too on my djembe! A lot of people think it sux playing like this for unknown reasons, but I think this style is awesome!

there actually is a traditional technique, which is beautiful, but for purposes of people like barefootdave, and me non-traditional just works better :)

this may not be traditional djembe technique, but it's very enjoyable and give me some new ideas about what's possible with the instrument. Impressive sound. Nice job.
