I see it the same way. The song is not so typical for that period after my opinion.It's not really commercial in every way.For instance the backing voices are quite frightening.

It is a great song but I would have said that this was ELO in their most commercial period. Their early albums were not commercial at all and contained, in my opinion, some of their best songs.x

That's one of the ELO songs reaching almost Beatles quality. It is innovative with the rhythmic background voices, it is not so commercial, the video is great. The song tells a story, what I like most. Too sad that ELO had not 10 songs like that. OK, they were great but I think they went too much in a commercial direction and lost quality.
