Mendez is one of the greatest trumpet players of the past century, and Helseth is an up-and-coming (incredible) talent. I would put Mendez above her any day, but only due to his experience. Personally, I prefer her tone better, but that is probably the difference in recording qualities (and years).

I didn't know that. As I said, she did an excellent job, but I still stand by Rafael Mendez playing a better version.

The song isn't written to have the entire passage tongued. It is Rafael's interpretation and wonderful execution of the piece, but it is not what Haydn originally wrote. Helseth is simply playing her interpretation of the (more) original version that Haydn wrote.

You cant deny he can tongue up a storm, but I dont necessarily think the piece calls for such a mariachi trumpet sound. |
