Salt Creek Bike Trail (Brookfield Zoo) Near Chicago
This is the easiest, most beautiful bike ride in the near Western Suburbs of Chicago. The path is entirely paved in asphalt. It starts just west of the Northern Parking Lot of Brookfield Zoo, over by British Home Nursing Home. There is free parking there. If going there on the bike, there is a convenient "secret" entrance just west of First Avenue (Illinois 171) on 26th Street in North Riverside. The path is about 7 miles one way, runs generally Southwest through Lyons, Brookfield, LaGrange Park, and ends up near Western Springs. There is no significant terrain, although the last segment (the old left segment at Wolf where the tobaggon slides used to be) is a little up hill--but not too bad. When exiting out here, just go south out the driveway and ride bikes four blocks into Western Springs (straight south) to the Oberweiss Ice Creme shop for a snack.Old timers will notice this year the FPD added a "right" or northwest segment at Wolf Road. This goes by the golf course and "dead ends" at 294 Tollway. But guess what? No it really doesn't! Just walk the bikes under the Tollway and you emerge in the little prairie preserve run by DuPage county. A quick walk thru the private prairie takes you to a west bound side street to Wolf Road. And another little "secret" appears--you are now able to go south on the gravel paths in the DuPage system. You can quickly find the Grau Mill trail--or if you want, continue to Jorie Boulevard. And there you are!!--by the grounds of Hamburger University--the Campus run by McDonalds to teach people how to run a franchise. If you continue up Jorie, you can make your way to Oak Brook mall and the most expensive, high end shopping in the Western Suburbs. Nieman Marcus is just a mile away!Have Fun !!!Recorded on June 17, 2008 using a Flip Video camcorder.
