Trivia...Frank asked Essra Mohawk to be the 1st female in The Mothers of Invention. Afterwards, she released the landmark "Primordial Lovers" on Reprise which was voted "top 25 of all time by Rolling Stone" & sang on School House Rock cartoons. Her songs have been covered by Cyndi Lauper (Change of Heart), Tina Turner (Stronger Than The Wind) & Lisa Fischer (So Intense), etc. ...So yes, Frank knew how to pick a winner.

That nose was distracting. But when were the Monkees (as a tv show) ever about being 'convincing'? LOL
Hindasound (September 25, 2008 at 6:39 pm)
If you know the background of the Monkees, you might understand this better. The band was brought together specifically for the tv show and were never even allowed to play/record together. Each guy would record his vocals with a studio band in the hit machine. The guys grew fed up and began to actually work together -- I can't imagine their frustration -- it stands to reason they would 'tolerate' making fun of the Monkees as an institution. FWIW, I love Zappa & the Monkees.

This is so funny! Both Zappa and Nesmith were pretty strange guys, but it's obvious they had a sense of humor about themselves.

No, Manson didn't audition for the Monkees, but the Beach Boys did record two of his songs. |
