Socrates is there. Think of how Socrates practiced philosophy and find the person who best matches his description. The painting is a representation of thought and not honest to time, hence Pythagoras and Plato are both depicted..

There is no historical basis for any of this beyond MAYBE the claim that "he disliked...writing & books", which originally seems to derive from Plato's dialogue "Phaedrus" lines 275c-e. Unfortunately, that dialog is usually regarded as belonging to Plato's so-called middle period, when he is supposed to have begun to use the character Socrates as a spokesman for his own views. So we really don't know why Socrates didn't write philosophy. Perhaps it was just because he spent so much time talking.

he is not there; i can see plato and aristotle and they are in their later years, and socrates would have been long dead by the time aristotle was, as he looks here, 50-60 years old. Boom, baby. |
