I think he might be singing about his mother, though Piaf fits the lyrics perfectly. It sends shivers down my spine like few songs do.

song called sarah because the introduction is a part of a poeme beaudelaire called "je n'ai pas pour maitresse une lionne illustre" when he was 16years old he loved a prostitute girl juive called sarah and he wrote her a poemeReggiani took this poeme but in the song he speak about Barbara. As Tierranadie said, moustaki wrote the song thinking to Piaf. That's all
Tierranadie (August 19, 2008 at 10:43 am)
Then you've found what you were searching. Anyhow, Baudelaire writes in his poem "she is only 20 years old" and Moustaki begins his song telling "she is no longer 20 years old long time ago". Otherwise, in his own version the Baudelaire verses disappeared.

Continued 3...Now, My French skills are humble, but I belive I understood the gest of the song, which is about a sick, fragile woman that looks much older than her age due to her life-style. I belive thi description perfectly fits Sarah La Louchette.Perhapas Moustaki got the inspiration to write this song from Baudlaire's poems and realtionship with Sarah. What do you think?

Continued 2...In another source, I found this description of her "The prostitute Sarah La Louchette incarnates the monstrous, diseased female who contaminates or destroys the artist." In Encyclopedia Britannica, it has been mentioned that Baudlaire died from a venereal disease, probably contacted from a prostitute nicknamed Sarah la Louchette. |
