I saw him in the Carolina's and in Houston in the 60's and 70's-a classic jobber who in the 40's was a headliner. Good worker.

I love the heel job Henning is putting on, he's got some creative stuff there! Gagne was awesome, love that series of shoulder blocks, he really stretched that last one lol! Vintage footage, thanks for posting this!

Inch for inch, pound for pound Verne was as great a worker as the sport will ever see in any era. Some still say to this day that the reason Verne wasn't given the NWA title was politics on the part of Lou Thesz and Sam Muchnick. The last laugh was Verne's when he broke off and founded the AWA which became a marvelously successful territory.Thank you for posting this.

I liked pro wrestling better when they pretended it was real.

Wow. This match reminded me how amazing Verne Gagne is. What a wrestler!

Gagne used to take on all comers back-to-back during workouts at his farm, and do so for real. He may have looked like a social studies teacher, but he was a master of his craft. If you think you could beat this old man, try it, even now he would kick your ass.

Gagne was a dam good star! Chicago NWA promoter Fred Kohler always lobbied for him to be NWA champ. The board didn't consider Verne a heavyweight. So Verne quit the NWA and fomred his won belt with Wally Karbo the AWA World Title.

Some intersting comments here... now some facts from other wrestlers. Verne Gagne was a world class amateur, a shrewd businessman, and tough as a bag of nails. This guy could put a world of hurt on just about anyone, and even gave Thesz a run for his money. A whole different level of "tough" with Verne, Lou, Stu, Bruiser, Robinson, et al.

Vern Gagne was an NCAA champion.

Age has niothing to good with it. It used to be that good wrestlers made it because they were just good at what they did. Whcih is why middle aged men such as Harley race and Ric Flair were popular champions in their day and made sense. The best of the best had many years of experience in their belt to win the title and carry it for a long time. |
