I think it talks about some one going to join the army in the verses, like how "friends plead you to stay" and starting something new in the first verse. And then after, the guy surrenders himself to a "world in gray" and is killed when "the sun will set for you"I think the album itself it a cry for less war

Linkin Park's third album, Minutes to Midnight, is a reference to the Doomsday Clock. In the music video for "Shadow of the Day", the current time is shown at the beginning of the video; by the end, it would have nearly reached midnight.
