In the middle ages they already were in existence. Towers were not specifically build for bells but often had a function as a beaken or defendable place for times off need. Friesland is one off the view places where there are many in existence. Often also at places where the village has changed its place and the church was torn down, the churchyard is still in function. Also in Ostfriesland and other places in northern Germany you find churches with a tower and a seperate brick bellfry.

I have never understood why in Netherlands there are these recent buildings with bells: haven't these churches got belltowers?
